Designing a Herbal Bowel Powder

A clinical case study from the teaching clinic at Core College

How does a practising herbalist decide which herbs to combine for a specific patient?

In our teaching clinic, prescriptions are never standardised. Even when two patients present with similar symptoms, the formula may differ depending on constitution, vitality, underlying patterns and the broader health picture.

In this short clinical demonstration, Helen Begadon explains the thinking behind a bespoke bowel powder formula prepared in the clinic. Rather than relying on a “one-size-fits-all” approach, the aim is not simply to stimulate elimination, but to support digestive tone, nourish tissue and encourage longer-term balance.

You will hear how different categories of herbs — including gentle stimulants, demulcents, tonics and bitters, are thoughtfully combined to create coherence within a prescription. The focus is always on the individual.
